My 2022 Reading Roundup
I had high, high hopes this year and man, did I fall flat on my face when it came to my 2022 reading goals. I set out to complete the PopSugar Reading Challenge in 2022. For those of you not in the know, it is a yearlong reading challenge with 50 prompts to complete.
And as it turns out, this is the exact opposite of motivating for me, despite my love of checklists. I think that there were two factors that contributed to how poorly I read in the past year: 1) My anxiety with planning a completely DIY’d wedding for 150 guests essentially by myself was to the damn moon. 2) I am a mood reader and the prompts really felt restrictive which often put me into reading slumps.
But enough excuses, let’s get into these sad stats.
In 2022, I read 27 books. That is 5 books less than 2021. Which doesn’t seem like a lot but I certainly felt the absence of books in my life this year.
My 27 books totaled 11,512 pages. My shortest book, The Grownup by Gillian Flynn, at 64 pages. My longest book was Voyager by Diana Gabaldon * at 870 pages. On average, my books were 426 pages long, which is significantly longer than my average of 369 pages in 2021.
Books by Page Count
In 2022, I read from 7 distinct categories. I read the most Fantasy books, with 12 Fantasy books, and Non-Fiction the least, with 1 Non-Fiction book.
On average, I rated my reads at 3.7 stars. My lowest rated book was The City We Became by N.K Jemisin * which I did not finish. This is a highly beloved book but it simply did not speak to me. For books I finished, my lowest rated was Voyager by Diana Gabladon *. While I love this world and the characters, it was about 300 pages too long.
My highest rated books were House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas *, which was a re-read for me, and The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman * .
Although this was certainly unintentional, I read mostly female authors this year. I read from 19 female authors in 2022 and only 2 male authors.
I read 5 books by Sarah J Maas, ringing in at my most read author in 2022. Honorable mentions go to Leigh Bardugo and Julia Quinn.
I read from 7 authors who were new to me and 14 authors who I had read before.
Here’s how I sourced my books in 2022:
What is probably the most interesting statistic, is when I read books. Because, I was all over the map this year. Let’s go…

You see, something happened…somewhere around September 9th…and I just had nothing left to give. So, you guessed it, I got married in September. Even though the stress was gone, it was such a major shift in my life to no longer have this huge event to focus on. I really struggled with post-wedding depression and i had a hard time coming back from that transition. But that’s okay. Everything is data. Everything is an opportunity to learn.
Alright my friends, that is my 2022 reading wrapped up. I am hoping that 2023 goes better but we are going to take it day by day this year.
Let me know what you read in 2022 and what you plan on reading in 2023!
