Blackberry Ginger Old Fashion
A few weeks ago, I ordered raw ginger root in my PrimeNow order for a curry recipe. I thought I was ordering by the piece but the groceries arrived and it turned out I had ordered by pound.
I ordered 1 pound of ginger root. That is a lot of ginger.
I used about inch in my recipe. Then peeled, diced into sizable pieces, and froze the rest. I hoped that someday, inspiration would strike, and I would find a use for it all.
And so here we are - A blackberry ginger spin on my favorite drink of all time - the old fashioned.
First…the blackberry ginger simple syrup. The star of the show.
Ingredients:
1/2 c sugar
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup fresh blackberries
2 inches of ginger, peeled and cubed
juice of 1/2 of a lemon
Method:
In a small sauce pan, over medium-high heat, combine sugar, water, blackberries, and ginger. Bring to a boil.
Once boiling, reduce heat to a simmer for 15 minutes. Then remove from the heat.
Add lemon juice and stir to combine.
Allow to cool completely and store in an air-tight container under refrigeration for up to one week.
Once your syrup is prepped and cooled, it’s time to construct the cocktail. Here’s what you’ll need:
Ingredients:
2 oz bourbon
0.5 oz blackberry ginger simple syrup
2 dashes aromatic bitters
3 blackberries
1 lemon slice
Ice
Method:
In a rocks glass, muddle 2 blackberries.
Add blackberry ginger simple syrup and aromatic bitters.
Fill glass with ice.
Pour bourbon over ice.
With a bar spoon, stir to combine.
Garnish with remaining blackberry and lemon slice.
Enjoy responsibly!
