Places in Southern Maine I Want to Visit This Summer
I live in the best state (I say this as I am currently staring out the window at the 10th day in a row of rain). This state is huge. And apparently, people outside of New England, don’t believe that it exists. What state is it? Maine of course.
The proud 23rd state in the union is know for its blueberries, pine trees, and the rocky, scenic coast. I have been an official resident of Maine since May of 2007. Like so many things in life, that change was challenging. I had a lot of emotions about moving to Maine but as it turns out, I had little to worry about.
In moving to Maine, I truly became myself. If you were one of those kids who never quite fit in growing up, try moving to a new state. In Maine, I found my career, my soon-to-be husband, and some of the best friends I have ever known.
Massachusetts will always be my home-home but Maine is my heart-home. I belong here. At least, for now…never say never to Florida.
This summer, I want to make the most of my beautiful state. Here’s what I’m looking forward to doing in Maine this year.
Wolfe’s Neck State Park (Freeport): This park is beautiful and full of mossy, rocky secret trails that will make you feel like a true explorer. Plus there is a beautiful coastline. A short journey from Portland, Wolfe’s Neck is a hidden gem of Southern Maine. Seriously, I feel like no one knows this one exists. It’s worth the trip and I can’t wait to go back!
Willard Beach (South Portland): A beach close to home with excellent rock hunting. I definitely regret not taking better advantage of how close this beach is to me last summer. Let’s fix that. No trip to Willard is complete without a stop at Scratch Baking Co for a bagel. But if you go on the weekend, get there at 7AM or pay the price (of all the bagels being sold out). When you’re well toasted and your bag is full of cool rocks, walk on over to Willard Scoops for some homemade ice cream to ruin your dinner.
Hobbitland (aka Vaughan Woods in Howell): Okay, this is one I have not visited yet but it got it’s nickname because it looks like hobbits might live there. Who wants to go with me? Let’s pack our elevenses snacks and make a day of it.
Wells Reserve at Laudholm (Wells): This beach is absolutely spectacular. And the grounds at Wells Reserve are beautiful. Be prepared for a bit of walk from the parking lot to the beach but the low crowd levels make it worth it. My beach chair has a straps that make it wearable like a backpack. So, away I go.
Bradbury Mountain State Park (Pownal): Affectionately known as the Bradybury Bump by locals, Bradbury Mountain State Park has a multipurpose trail system and beautiful views. Although often shrugged off as “not real hiking”, Bradbury has a lot to offer and is worth a visit.
Tell me what is on your summer bucket list! And if you’ve been to Maine, tell me your favorite spots!
