The Four Winds Book Review
“A warrior believes in an end she can’t see and fights for it. A warrior never gives up. A warrior fights for those weaker than herself. It sounds like motherhood to me.”
- Kristin Hannah
It’s no surprise to anyone who’s been here for a while that I love Kristin Hannah. So, when her new book hit the shelves, The Four Winds *, it immediately went on my TBR list.
The Four Winds is set in Texas in 1934 as the dust bowl rolls through America’s heartland leaving a wake of devastation and poverty. It tells the story of Elsa, a fragile girl with big dreams. When she she falls pregnant, is kicked out of her home, and marries the son of Italian immigrants, she had no inkling of the difficult things they would face together or the toll it would take on her.
When Tony, her husband, sets off in search of a better life and leaves his family behind, Elsa must find a strength she never believed she had to keep her children alive. After a dust storm buries any hope of reviving the farm, Elsa and her children head to California to look for work.
In California, things are not what they seem. The golden promise land is filled with tent cities, long lines for government assistance, and too little work for all those searching.
This is a story of the inexplicable strength of a mother faced with impossible choices. And for Elsa, there is no choice when it comes to her children. She learns to work, to make the most of every moment, and use her voice to speak out against the injustices she sees around her.
If you love historical fiction and family drama, this book is for you. If you haven’t read Kristin Hannah before, I promise you’ll love her work.
